Did you grow up learning the fairy tale that all you have to do is work hard, get a good job, and you’ll magically arrive at the good life? How’s that working out?

What, exactly, is the good life, anyway? Is it a universal term or does it mean different things to different people in different places? What are the narratives attached to the “good life” and what are the narratives that come into play when the fairy tale does not come true? Finally, what happens when employers and employees have different ideas about the role of work in workers’ lives?

In this brief, free-wheeling conversation about my research, I discuss these questions with Dawn Rivers, the wonderfully thoughtful host of Mergers and Acquisitions, the podcast of the Society for Economic Anthropology.
